Even the dogs are going green…

November 6, 2009

One of the things that gets to me most when I’m walking around town is  spotting those little black bags of dog poo. Considerate (to other people, but not the environment) dog owners thoughtfully pick up after Rover and then bin the bag or leave the carefully packaged, er, ‘present’ in its place.

Obviously, picking it up is the courteous thing to do. But this little black bag causes a few problems: it stops the poo from decomposing naturally; it has to be collected and disposed off in some other way (landfill or burning); and it’s introducing more plastic – which can’t be re-used or recycled for obvious reasons – into the system.

So I’ve done a little bit of searching and found some truly biodegradable and compostable dog poo BioBags. Whilst digging around, I read some articles and found a number of ‘environmentally friendly, degradable’ bags. But they’re not actually that friendly because they’re polyethylene (PE) blends, which means they photodegrade i.e. simply break down into smaller and smaller pieces.

BioBags, on the other hand, can be added to the compost heap (but not if you want to put it on your veg patch later!) or a wormery dedicated to your dog’s waste (can’t be mixed with kitchen waste). I ordered my BioBags from and the wormery is on my wishlist, but you can get one at
